Dressage
Building Better Partnerships Through Training, Education, and Connection

At its core, dressage is about communication, balance, and partnership between horse and rider. Derived from the French word meaning “training,” dressage focuses on the gradual development of the horse’s physical and mental abilities through thoughtful, progressive training rooted in classical horsemanship.

Dressage is more than just a competitive discipline. It’s also a foundation for better riding, better horse care, and stronger partnerships.

What Is Dressage?

Dressage is often described as the art of riding and training a horse in harmony with the rider. Through consistent, systematic training, horses become more balanced, supple, responsive, and confident while riders develop greater feel, timing, and effectiveness in the saddle.

While dressage is an Olympic sport, its principles benefit riders at every level and across many disciplines. The foundational concepts of rhythm, relaxation, balance, and communication help create horses that are stronger, more athletic, and more enjoyable to ride, whether your goals involve competition or simply becoming a better horse person.

As riders progress, dressage becomes both highly technical and deeply artistic, blending precision with elegance in a way that showcases the partnership between horse and rider.

Rooted in Classical Horsemanship

Dressage principles can be traced all the way back to classical Greek horsemanship and has since evolved over centuries through cavalry traditions and classical riding schools. Many of those foundational principles are still used today and based on proven methods developed to improve the horse’s strength, balance, responsiveness, and longevity.

These classical principles remain relevant because they prioritize the horse’s long-term physical and mental well-being while creating a clear, progressive system for training.

Today, dressage continues to serve as a foundation for many other equestrian disciplines, including eventing, jumping, and driving.

Dressage as a Sport

Competitive dressage is built on a progressive system of levels and tests that guide both horse and rider through increasing complexity over time. At each stage, riders are asked to perform specific movements within a standard arena, while judges evaluate the partnership on accuracy, rhythm, balance, suppleness, and overall harmony. Scores are given on a scale from 0–10, behind every number is an assessment of the quality of communication and understanding between horse and rider.

Opportunities within competitive dressage can include:

  • Schooling shows for horses or riders gaining experience
  • Recognized competitions and championship qualifying events
  • Musical freestyle performances
  • Pas de Deux and Quadrille team performances
  • Sport horse breeding and young horse classes
  • Adult amateur equitation programs

Whether the goal is a local show down the road or a national championship arena, dressage offers a lifelong pathway of learning, refinement, and partnership—meeting each rider exactly where they are and growing with them over time.

More Than Competition

For many riders, dressage is far more than a sport or a set of tests, it’s a way of learning how to listen, communicate, and grow alongside your horse. It develops patience, discipline, consistency, empathy, and feel; qualities that are not only for competition but also carry into every part of horsemanship and life.

As former director of the Spanish Riding School, Alois Podhajsky, once said, horses teach us “self-control, constancy and the ability to understand what goes on in the mind and feelings of another creature.”  That philosophy continues to shape the heart of dressage today.

It’s also what makes continued education so valuable. Whether you’re riding in the ring, training at home, or simply working to better understand your horse, there is always more to learn, refine, and apply.
