Getting Started in Dressage & Eventing

Whether you’re brand new to horses, returning to riding after time away, or exploring a new discipline with your current horse, welcome. Dressage and eventing are sports built on partnership, horsemanship, education, and continual growth - and there is a place for riders of all ages, goals, and experience levels.

Getting started can feel overwhelming, but every rider begins somewhere. You don't need to have all the answers before taking the first step. Both dressage and eventing offer a lifelong journey of learning, helping riders build confidence, develop new skills, and create stronger partnerships with their horses.

At CSDEA, our goal is to make that journey feel approachable, supportive, and exciting by connecting riders with the resources, opportunities, and community that help them succeed.

What Is Dressage?

Dressage is often described as the foundation of all riding disciplines because it focuses on developing the skills every horse and rider need to succeed: communication, balance, strength, suppleness, and harmony. Through systematic training, dressage helps horses become more athletic and responsive while helping riders become more effective, balanced, and aware.

One of the greatest misconceptions about dressage is that it is only for elite competitors or specialized horses. In reality, riders of all ages, backgrounds, and goals can benefit from dressage training. Whether your goal is to improve your horse's way of going, become a more confident rider, or pursue competition, dressage provides a framework for continual learning and development.

What Is Eventing?

Eventing combines three phases into one sport:

Dressage
Cross Country
Show Jumping

Often described as an equestrian triathlon, eventing challenges horse and rider to develop a wide range of skills while building trust and partnership along the way.

One of the things many riders love about eventing is the variety. The sport encourages continual learning, develops well-rounded horsemanship, and provides opportunities for growth both in and out of the competition arena. Whether you're attending your first schooling horse trial, exploring combined tests, or working toward recognized competitions, eventing offers a rewarding journey for riders of all ages and experience levels.

You Don’t Need to Have Everything Figured Out

One of the most common misconceptions about getting started in dressage and eventing is the idea that you need everything in place before you begin—the “right” horse, expensive tack, competition goals, or years of experience behind you. In reality, none of that is required to take the first step.

Most riders begin exactly where they are, with curiosity and a willingness to learn. For some, that means taking weekly lessons and building skills over time. For others, it might mean auditing clinics, volunteering at local events, watching competitions, or attending educational seminars to better understand the sport. Some riders lease a horse to gain experience, while others dip their toes into schooling shows when they feel ready.

There is no single path into dressage or eventing, and no “correct” timeline you need to follow. Every rider’s journey looks a little different, shaped by their goals, opportunities, and partnership with their horse. What matters most is simply starting where you are and allowing your education and confidence to grow from there.

If you’re interested in competing, it often helps to understand that there are different types of shows, and many riders begin exactly where they feel most comfortable, usually with schooling shows. Both schooling and recognized competitions play an important role in a rider’s development, offering different levels of structure, experience, and goals.

Schooling Shows

Schooling shows are designed to be welcoming, educational, and supportive, especially for riders who are new to the competition environment or working on building confidence.
